Hand luggage or checked baggage: how to choose the best option
The choice between hand luggage and checked baggage should start not with the airline, but with the format of the trip. It is this that determines how many things you really need and how important speed of movement is.
1When carry-on luggage is the best solution
If you are flying for 1–3 days, for example, on a short business trip or to a business meeting, carry-on luggage is the best option. It allows you to arrive at the airport later, avoid queuing to check in your luggage, and get straight down to business immediately after arrival. For such a trip, a change of clothes, shoes, and a minimal set of cosmetics are usually enough, which can easily fit into a compact suitcase.
Hand luggage also works well for city breaks or frequent flights when it is important to move quickly between the airport, hotel, and city. In this case, not having luggage saves 30-60 minutes at each airport and reduces the risk of delays during transfers.
2When is it better to take luggage
However, if the trip lasts 5-7 days or more, or involves a change of climate, business and everyday outfits, it is difficult to do without luggage. A checked suitcase allows you to take extra shoes, outerwear, a full set of cosmetics, and “spare” items without worrying about liquid and weight limits.
Luggage is also a must for family trips, winter trips, or active vacations that require special equipment. In such cases, saving on luggage often results in discomfort during the trip itself.
3Direct flight or transfers: how this affects your choice
The route should also be taken into account. If the flight is direct and without transfers, luggage does not pose any significant difficulties. But on complex routes with several flights, hand luggage significantly reduces the risk of losing items and makes it easier to adapt to changes in the schedule.
For many, a combined format is the optimal solution. Documents, a laptop, chargers, and one change of clothes remain in your carry-on baggage, while your main clothing is checked in. Even if your suitcase is delayed, you remain in control of the most important things and do not fall out of your work process.
4The role of the airline in choosing your luggage
Before buying a ticket, it is important to check the airline’s rules regarding size and weight. Some low-cost airlines have such limited carry-on luggage allowances that it is more convenient to purchase additional luggage than to repack your belongings at the airport.
